He was eighth of at least a dozen children of James Wilson Claggett and his wife Miriam McKee. His Grandfather Ninean Claggett is recorded as having fought in the Revolutionary war. His Great Grandfather James Wilson is said to be one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. David studied law before joining the military at the onset of
