In 1840 Napoleon's remains were repatriated to France, although the tomb, at Les Invalides in Paris, was not completed until 1861. The sarcophagus rests in a circular open crypt, surrounded by twelve pillars depicting victories. Between the pillars are ten relief panels showing Napoleon's achievments.
